Around 1,200 dignitaries from Bangladesh and abroad are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected government in Dhaka. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, secured a sweeping mandate in the recent parliamentary elections. Notable international figures like Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla are set to attend.
Several other prominent international figures are also expected to be present at the ceremony. Nepal will be represented by its Foreign Minister Bala Nanda Sharma, and Sri Lanka’s Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa is also slated to participate. The United Kingdom’s Indo-Pacific Under-Secretary, Seema Malhotra, is expected to attend, with a possibility of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu’s participation.
Invitations have been sent out following diplomatic norms, with confirmations from invited nations still awaited. India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s attendance at the ceremony. The MEA emphasized the enduring friendship between India and Bangladesh, welcoming the transition to an elected government under Tarique Rahman’s leadership.
The ceremony marks a significant political moment for Bangladesh as it transitions to a newly elected administration post-BNP’s victory. The 13th parliamentary election results were published, with preparations for the oath-taking ceremony already underway. The BNP won 209 out of 297 seats, with results pending for two constituencies.
