Sydney Sixers have named James Hopes as their new head coach on a two-year deal, announced the Big Bash League. This marks Hopes’ first head coaching role at the professional level, having previously worked as an assistant under renowned coaches globally.
Hopes, a former Australian international all-rounder, currently serves as the bowling coach for Punjab Kings in the IPL and Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket. He has also held coaching positions with teams like Delhi Capitals, Brisbane Heat, Queensland Bulls, Hobart Hurricanes, and Tasmanian Tigers.
The 47-year-old Hopes takes over from former coach Greg Shipperd, who was removed midway through his two-year contract despite leading the Sixers to the BBL final in January. Expressing his excitement, Hopes stated, “I’m incredibly honored to join the Sydney Sixers, a club with a proud history and a strong identity.”
“I’m excited to work with a talented playing group and contribute to the next phase of the Sixers’ success in the BBL,” added Hopes in a statement released by Sixers. He brings a wealth of experience, having played for Queensland Bulls and represented Australia in numerous ODIs and T20Is.
Sydney Sixers General Manager Rachael Haynes praised Hopes, stating, “James is an exceptional cricket mind with a proven track record of developing players and building high-performing environments.” Haynes expressed the club’s delight in welcoming Hopes and looked forward to an exciting new chapter with him.
With the appointment of James Hopes, Sydney Thunder remains the only BBL club without a coach for the upcoming season, following the departure of Trevor Bayliss after five seasons at the helm.
