Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, had to cancel his planned visit to Eswatini as several nations, including Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar, unexpectedly revoked overflight permissions for his chartered plane. This decision was attributed to China’s alleged economic coercion, according to Presidential Office Secretary-General Pan Men-an. Lai expressed disappointment over the situation, emphasizing Taiwan’s commitment to global engagement despite external pressures.
President Lai Ching-te, from the Democratic Progressive Party, reaffirmed Taiwan’s determination to foster international friendships and contribute to the global community. The visit to Eswatini, coinciding with significant historical events in the African nation, aimed at promoting shared prosperity in security, economy, and digital technology. Despite the cancellation, Taiwan remains resolute in its efforts to strengthen ties with like-minded partners worldwide.
The trip, originally scheduled from April 24 to 26, was intended to commemorate the 40th anniversary of King Mswati III’s reign and his 58th birthday. King Mswati III personally invited President Lai to join the celebrations, highlighting their countries’ longstanding relationship. The visit’s theme, “Celebrating Together, Prospering Together,” underscored the mutual goals of enhancing security, economic growth, and technological advancement.
