The Tamil film “Members of the Problematic Family,” directed by R Gowtham, has been selected as the Opening Night Film for the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2026 edition. Director R Gowtham described the film as a poignant exploration of grief, family dynamics, and community complexities. The movie, which premiered at Berlinale, will kick off the festival on August 14 in Melbourne.
Director R Gowtham and lead actor Karuththadayan will be present at the festival’s Opening Night celebrations and the Australian premiere of the film. The IFFM Awards jury competition has nominated the film for Best Indie Film and Best Director categories this year. The festival is scheduled to take place from August 13 to 23, showcasing a diverse array of Indian cinema to Australian audiences.
“Members of the Problematic Family” delves into the aftermath of a young man’s mysterious death, triggering emotional upheaval within his family and community. Through a sixteen-day funeral ritual, the film unravels buried emotions, conflicts, and intricate relationships among the characters.
