The Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) has requested six Assembly seats from the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. This demand, though informally conveyed, is expected to kick off intense negotiations within the alliance in the coming weeks. As the election season approaches, major political parties in Tamil Nadu are ramping up their preparations.
The Election Commission is anticipated to announce the poll schedule in March, with voting likely to occur in April. Consequently, parties are engaging in alliance discussions, evaluating constituencies, mobilizing grassroots support, and launching public outreach programs. The AIADMK currently leads the NDA in the state, which comprises various parties including the BJP, PMK, AMMK, TMC, and others.
While formal seat-sharing negotiations have not yet begun, alliance partners are starting to claim the constituencies they aim to contest. The TMC’s request for six seats has garnered attention, particularly considering the party’s previous allocation of a Rajya Sabha seat. This historical arrangement is expected to influence the upcoming discussions, which will need to navigate competing demands effectively.
Recent political developments have seen shifts in alliances, notably with the DMDK aligning with the DMK camp instead of the AIADMK. This move has prompted other NDA allies to push for more seats. On the other hand, the DMK has initiated discussions with its partners under the INDIA bloc, including the Congress, CPI(M), MDMK, and others. Negotiations on seat-sharing are crucial as they will significantly impact the landscape of Tamil Nadu’s 2026 Assembly election battle.
