With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching on April 23, political activity in the state has heightened. The ruling DMK is organizing a significant Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) rally in Salem on April 15 to strengthen voter support. However, there is reported dissatisfaction within the DMK leadership due to the uncertainty surrounding Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s attendance at the event.
Political sources link this uncertainty to past tensions during alliance talks between the DMK and Congress. Discussions had allegedly taken place within the Congress about potentially aligning with actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamil Nadu Victory Party (TVK). Despite initial openness from Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi reportedly opposed the move, leading to the reaffirmation of the alliance with the DMK.
While the alliance remains intact, recent weeks have seen signs of strain. Observers note Rahul Gandhi’s limited presence in Tamil Nadu’s campaign circuit, sparking speculation about his level of involvement. Reports hint that he might reduce or delay his campaign activities in the state, adding to the perception of a disconnect.
Recent events have fueled further speculation. Despite being in Puducherry on the same day for election-related events, Rahul Gandhi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin did not share a platform, addressing separate gatherings instead. Similarly, during visits to Chennai and Coimbatore, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra did not participate in joint rallies with DMK leaders.
Amidst the ongoing speculation, Tamil Nadu Congress in-charge Girish Chodankar has reassured that Rahul Gandhi is expected to campaign in the state before polling day. He also mentioned that senior leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi, and leaders from Telangana and Karnataka, are likely to join the campaign trail. As the election nears, the unity of the DMK-Congress alliance and the visibility of its top leadership could play a crucial role in shaping voter sentiment.
