Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran expressed regret for his comment about actor Trisha Krishnan, which received criticism from various political leaders. Nagendran clarified that the remark was unintentional and not his stance on personal criticism, following a media interaction in Tirunelveli where he responded to a speech by TVK leader Vijay in Salem on February 13.
He mentioned that BJP national women’s wing president Vanathi Srinivasan discussed the issue with him, and he sincerely apologized if his words caused discomfort. The controversy arose when Nagendran allegedly made an inappropriate personal reference to Trisha while discussing Vijay’s speech in Salem, leading to widespread condemnation.
Critics, including DMK MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian, MP Kanimozhi, and Congress MP Sudha Ramakrishnan, denounced the statement as unacceptable and disrespectful. They questioned the propriety of a senior political figure making such comments about a woman not involved in active politics, emphasizing the importance of maintaining civil public discourse.
Amid the criticism, Trisha released a statement through her lawyer condemning the disrespectful behavior. She expressed shock at the derogatory remarks made by a high-ranking political figure and clarified her non-involvement in politics, asserting her preference for political neutrality. Trisha emphasized her desire to be recognized solely for her professional work and urged against dragging her name into unrelated matters, highlighting the responsibility public figures hold in their speech.
