A.N.S. Prasad, the Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson, has staunchly supported party leader K. Annamalai, alleging that political opponents in Maharashtra distorted his statements on Mumbai to spark controversy during the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election campaign. Prasad clarified that Annamalai’s remarks aimed to praise Mumbai as a global city transcending regional boundaries, highlighting its economic significance and the inclusive nature of the Marathi community.
The BJP accused certain factions of the Opposition of misinterpreting Annamalai’s words for political gain. Prasad criticized calls from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut for action against Annamalai, arguing that such demands undermine the freedom of speech protected by the constitution.
The situation escalated when Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray reportedly made threatening comments against Annamalai. Prasad condemned this rhetoric, emphasizing the need for civil discourse in politics and warning against inciting hostility through intimidation tactics.
Highlighting Maharashtra’s historical contributions to national unity, Prasad refuted claims that Annamalai is anti-Maharashtra, asserting that such allegations are baseless and irresponsible. He also praised Annamalai’s admiration for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Maharashtra’s rich heritage, portraying the BJP leader as a disciplined former IPS officer who upholds the vision of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.”
In a call for peace and unity, the Tamil Nadu BJP representative urged leaders from all parties to retract divisive statements and concentrate on positive political engagement. Prasad stressed the importance of fostering regional pride while reinforcing national solidarity, emphasizing that Mumbai symbolizes both Maharashtra’s essence and India’s global prominence.
