Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) criticized the detention of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition members in New Delhi amid protests against the NEET controversy. Vijay expressed solidarity with the Opposition’s protests within the Parliament complex following the police crackdown on ‘Sansad Chalo’ march participants. TVK has consistently opposed NEET, advocating for its permanent abolition due to the hardships it imposes on students and families.
Vijay emphasized the need for structural changes, proposing the transfer of education authority from the Concurrent List to the State List to allow states to set their admission policies. Until this shift occurs, he suggested creating a Special Concurrent List to grant states more control over education. TVK presented both permanent and interim solutions at an educational awards event, urging the Union government to understand the sentiments of Tamil Nadu’s people and students by scrapping NEET.
The Chief Minister’s statements come amidst nationwide protests over NEET-related issues, including alleged question paper leaks and exam irregularities. In New Delhi, the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march saw the participation of students, youth groups, and activists demanding reforms in the examination system and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The demonstration faced heavy police presence and detentions, including Opposition leaders like Rahul Gandhi, who supported the students’ cause.
In Tamil Nadu, student groups and political parties protested against the police actions in Delhi and reiterated their demand for NEET’s abolition.
