Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will kick off the 49th edition of the Chennai Book Fair on Thursday, officially commencing one of South India’s prominent literary gatherings. The book fair, held at the Nandanam YMCA Ground, will be open to the public until January 21. This annual event, a significant part of Chennai’s cultural agenda, will welcome visitors from 11:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily, offering free entry to all attendees.

This year’s fair is distinguished by its vast scale and variety, with a record-breaking 1,000 stalls set up, making it one of the largest book fairs in its nearly fifty-year history. Publishers from Tamil Nadu and other Indian regions, as well as Tamil publishers from Singapore, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka, are participating, showcasing the expanding global influence of Tamil literature.

In a bid to enhance the international presence, major global publishing giants like Penguin and HarperCollins have also established stalls, providing readers with a diverse selection of international titles alongside Indian and regional publications. As per tradition, all books sold at the fair will be offered at a minimum discount of 10%, attracting students, researchers, teachers, and book enthusiasts alike.

Apart from book sales, the fair will feature a series of lectures, discussions, and interactive sessions every evening, with distinguished scholars, writers, and intellectuals from various fields participating. A significant aspect of this year’s fair is its emphasis on inclusivity and engaging new readers. For the first time, a separate hall has been designated exclusively for children, aiming to cultivate reading habits from a young age.

Another noteworthy addition is the provision of a special hall for a ‘Queer’ publishing house managed by transgender individuals, underscoring a broader perspective for the publishing and literary domain. To ensure convenient access for visitors, organizers have arranged free mini-bus services from the fair venue to the Saidapet Bus Stand. With its expanded scope, global participation, and inclusive initiatives, the 49th Chennai Book Fair is poised to uphold the city’s standing as a vibrant center for books, ideas, and intellectual discourse.
