Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, in his Assembly speech, referenced the historical role of the British parliamentary system. He emphasized the significance of democratic values while congratulating TVK MLA J.C.D. Prabhakar on becoming the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Vijay recalled how Speakers in England, during the monarchy, risked their lives to convey Parliament’s decisions to the King.
He mentioned the Speaker’s duty to inform the King of Parliament’s rejections, even when it meant facing severe consequences. Vijay also noted the tradition where newly elected Speakers symbolically hesitated to take their seats, escorted by House leaders. This act continues as a representation of democratic principles, according to the Chief Minister.
Vijay stressed the Assembly’s role as the “heart of democracy” and quoted Abraham Lincoln’s definition of democracy. He highlighted the importance of treating all legislators equally, irrespective of party size. The Chief Minister emphasized upholding legislative traditions and democratic values, ensuring the government’s actions benefit a broader population.
TVK MLA J.C.D. Prabhakar was elected unopposed as the Speaker, with M. Ravi Shankar as Deputy Speaker, both from the ruling party. Prabhakar, representing Thousand Lights constituency, and Ravi Shankar from Thuraiyur, were elected without contest. Following tradition, House leaders escorted Prabhakar to the Speaker’s chair, receiving congratulations from members across party lines.
