Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to officially inaugurate the Singappenn Special Task Force, a dedicated police unit aimed at enhancing the protection of women and children throughout the state. The launch event is scheduled for Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Jawaharlal Nehru Rajarathinam Sports Stadium in Chennai. This initiative was among the initial key announcements made by Vijay upon assuming office as Chief Minister.
Senior officials mentioned that the establishment of this specialized force underscores the government’s dedication to bolstering the safety of women and children through targeted policing, prompt responses, and improved collaboration among law enforcement bodies. K. Bhavaneeswari, a senior IPS officer, has been appointed as the first Inspector General (IG) of the Singappenn Special Task Force.
Comprising over 30 police personnel, including a Superintendent of Police, two Deputy Superintendents of Police, four Inspectors, and various other officers and staff, the newly formed unit has been equipped with a unique uniform to distinguish its members. Women officers and Sub-Inspectors within the task force will wear blue shirts paired with khaki trousers, along with black caps and shoes, to ensure easy recognition while carrying out their duties statewide.
Initially planned for a launch on May 29, the inauguration of the Singappenn Special Task Force was postponed at the last minute due to administrative considerations. With the formal launch now rescheduled for Tuesday, the specialized force is anticipated to kick off operations promptly thereafter. Following the ceremony in Chennai, Singappenn personnel will be deployed across Tamil Nadu, operating in all districts.
Officials highlighted that the task force’s establishment aims to offer a more robust and coordinated approach to addressing crimes against women and children. In addition to handling complaints and ensuring swift responses during emergencies, the force will concentrate on preventive policing, surveillance, victim support, and awareness campaigns. The introduction of the Singappenn Special Task Force is viewed as a key law-and-order initiative of the Vijay government, aiming to enhance public trust in policing and foster a safer environment across Tamil Nadu.
