The Tamil Nadu government has launched a statewide safety operation targeting industries dealing with ammonia. Notices have been sent to 28 establishments for breaching worker accommodation regulations. In response to a recent ammonia gas leak incident that resulted in fatalities, the government is intensifying safety measures.
The Labour Welfare Department highlighted that the non-compliant industries failed to adhere to the rule of keeping worker housing at least 300 meters away from ammonia-related facilities. Affected businesses are instructed to relocate employee housing to meet safety standards promptly. The government is taking a zero-tolerance stance on safety violations involving hazardous substances.
To ensure worker safety, the government has set up 21 special inspection teams to scrutinize ammonia-handling units across the state. These teams will evaluate various safety aspects, including emergency plans, health standards, and compliance with regulations. The inspections aim to identify and rectify safety deficiencies promptly.
