The Tamil Nadu government, led by C. Joseph Vijay, recently expanded its Cabinet by inducting 23 new ministers. This move aims to enhance governance, fill key portfolio vacancies, and accommodate alliance partners, including the Congress party. Following the Assembly election, Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the largest party with 108 seats, forming the government with support from various allies.
The initial Cabinet, which saw Vijay taking oath as Chief Minister on May 10 along with nine ministers, had some key departments without dedicated ministers. This led to speculation about an imminent expansion, which was confirmed with the induction of 23 new legislators and leaders. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly appointed ministers.
The expansion also marked the return of the Congress party to the Tamil Nadu Cabinet after several decades, with two Congress MLAs being sworn in as ministers. Leaders of alliance parties supporting the government attended the swearing-in ceremony, emphasizing unity and collaboration. The newly expanded ministry includes individuals from various regions, aiming to enhance regional representation and bolster the government’s administrative capabilities.
