Strong reactions have surfaced among Tamil Nadu political leaders following President Droupadi Murmu’s disappointment with an official event organized by the West Bengal government. The AIADMK and AMMK leaders condemned what they saw as a breach of protocol and disrespect to the nation’s highest constitutional office. AIADMK’s Edappadi K. Palaniswami expressed deep regret over any disrespect shown to the President, emphasizing the significance of upholding respect for constitutional institutions.
AMMK founder T. T. V. Dhinakaran also denounced the incident, labeling it a deliberate insult to the President and calling for an apology from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Dhinakaran highlighted the non-adherence to established protocol during the President’s visit, pointing out the absence of a customary welcome by the Chief Minister or a senior Minister. He criticized the last-minute change of the event venue, attributing it to the controversy and reflecting negatively on the organizers.
The statements from Tamil Nadu leaders have fueled a political debate regarding the incident, with opposition voices stressing the need for accountability and adherence to constitutional protocols in official engagements involving the President.
