In a move to enhance transparency and efficiency in welfare delivery, the Tamil Nadu government has mandated that applicants must now submit marriage assistance scheme applications online. This decision aims to eliminate manual submissions and middlemen, ensuring a uniform and time-bound processing system throughout the state. The reform is part of the state government’s SimpleGov initiative, launched in 2023 to simplify administrative procedures and enhance citizen access to public services through digital platforms.
An empowered committee appointed by the state government has reviewed the functioning of various marriage assistance schemes and proposed significant changes to streamline the process. As per the committee’s recommendations, applications for all eligible schemes must now be submitted only after the marriage has been solemnized. The revised procedure applies to key welfare schemes such as the Dr. Dharmambal Ammaiyar Ninaivu Widow Remarriage Assistance Scheme, the Annai Theresa Ninaivu Marriage Assistance Scheme, the E.V.R. Maniammaiyar Ninaivu Marriage Assistance Scheme, and the Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Ninaivu Inter-Caste Marriage Assistance Scheme.
Applicants are required to submit their requests within six months from the date of marriage, as per the state government order. The Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency has been tasked with facilitating the online application process through e-Seva centers or other designated digital platforms to ensure smooth implementation across districts. To expedite the process, the state government has set clear processing timelines. Applications for registered marriages will be processed within 20 days, while those for unregistered marriages will be dealt with within 30 days.
Officials have explained that the difference in timelines is due to the additional verification procedures necessary for unregistered marriages. By transitioning entirely to an online system, the state government aims to prevent delays, minimize procedural discrepancies, and reduce exploitation by intermediaries. This shift is also anticipated to establish a transparent tracking mechanism, enabling beneficiaries to monitor the status of their applications. The state government has emphasized that this reform underscores its broader commitment to digital governance, accountability, and citizen-centric service delivery, ensuring that financial aid reaches eligible beneficiaries efficiently and without obstacles.
