Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S. Keerthana addressed the controversy surrounding her reaction to questions about the brutal rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Coimbatore. She explained that her body language had been misinterpreted and politicized by opposition parties on social media. The minister faced criticism for smiling during a media interaction in Virudhunagar, with many accusing her of insensitivity in light of the tragic incident.
Keerthana defended herself, stating that her smile was not in response to any specific question about the young girl’s murder. She clarified that the smile occurred naturally at the end of an industry-related briefing with reporters. Emphasizing the gravity of the crime, she highlighted Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s prompt action, which led to the arrest of the accused individuals, Karthik and Mohanraj, within 24 hours. The minister assured that strict measures would be taken against them under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The minister underscored the government’s commitment to seeking justice for the child and ensuring the safety of women and children as top priorities. Keerthana expressed dismay over the distortion of facts for political gain and stressed that public safety and justice would not be compromised by the Tamil Nadu government. While acknowledging legitimate criticism, she criticized the manipulation of private moments for political purposes, deeming it unhealthy for society.
