As the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approach in April, political activities in the state are intensifying. Efforts are underway to strengthen the AIADMK–BJP alliance before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign launch near Chennai tomorrow. The ruling DMK is striving to maintain power, while the AIADMK is pushing to regain control.
The DMK-led front comprises a coalition of parties including the Indian National Congress, MDMK, Communist parties, Indian Union Muslim League, and Makkal Needhi Maiam. On the other hand, Naam Tamilar Katchi, under Seeman’s leadership, plans to contest independently. Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is also making moves, with Vijay positioning himself as the party’s chief ministerial candidate.
The AIADMK–BJP alliance is gearing up for its inaugural campaign rally on January 23 in Madurantakam. Prime Minister Modi is expected to address the rally alongside senior leaders from the alliance parties. Discussions are progressing to solidify the alliance structure, which currently includes PMK (Anbumani faction), Tamil Maanila Congress, New Justice Party, and Indian Democratic Party.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal is reportedly in talks with key leaders to finalize alliance arrangements, including discussions with T.T.V. Dhinakaran for potential expansion. Once the alliance is formalized, seat-sharing agreements will be signed, with AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami likely to ink the pact in the presence of Piyush Goyal, setting the stage for a vigorous campaign in Tamil Nadu.
