The honorees, spanning various fields like medicine, social work, science, arts, literature, and public administration, highlight the state’s dedication to nation-building and community welfare. Among the notable awardees is Kalipatti Ramasamy Palanisamy, a respected medical professional, honored with the Padma Bhushan for his groundbreaking work in healthcare, especially benefiting rural and underserved areas of Tamil Nadu.
S.K.M. Maeilanandhan, a prominent social worker, also received the Padma Bhushan for his significant contributions to education, social welfare, and community development, positively impacting numerous lives in the state. The Padma Shri category recognized achievers in arts, medicine, and science, with individuals like Gayatri Balasubramanian and Ranjani Balasubramanian acknowledged for their efforts in preserving and reinterpreting traditional Indian art forms.
The medical field saw recognition for figures like H.V. Hande for his extensive service in healthcare and Punniamurthy Natesan for his dedicated research in medical and veterinary sciences. In the realm of science and engineering, K. Ramasamy and Veezhinathan Kamakoti, the current Director of IIT Madras, were honored with the Padma Shri for their contributions to scientific knowledge and technical education. Public service was highlighted through K. Vijayakumar, a senior IPS officer known for his people-centric policing and investigative roles, including operations against Veerappan.
Acknowledgment was also given to individuals excelling in traditional and performing arts, with Padma Shri awards bestowed upon Othuvaar Thiruthani Swaminathan, Rajastapathi Kaliappa Goundar, and Thiruvarur Bhakthavathsalam for their efforts in preserving and promoting classical and folk traditions.
