The Tamil Nadu government has taken action against 23 stone quarries in Virudhunagar district for exceeding their permitted lease boundaries during quarrying activities. This move comes after inspections revealed violations of mining regulations. The Department of Natural Resources, led by Minister Dr T.K. Prabhu, conducted a thorough review to crack down on illegal mining and enhance monitoring of mineral extraction activities in the state.
Authorities in the Department of Geology and Mining conducted a detailed assessment of quarry operations in Virudhunagar district to prevent unauthorized mineral extraction. Using drone technology, they surveyed and measured 76 quarries in the district to ensure compliance with approved lease conditions and mining limits. Aerial inspections were crucial in accurately identifying any deviations from the permitted operations at these quarries.
Following the drone survey, a comprehensive report was compiled highlighting irregularities at certain quarry sites. Minister Dr T.K. Prabhu convened a review meeting with officials from the Geology and Mining Department of Virudhunagar district to analyze the findings and plan further steps. Subsequently, 23 quarries were singled out for allegedly conducting mining activities beyond their authorized areas, leading to the temporary suspension of their operations for closer scrutiny and potential legal action.
This action is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance regulation in the mining sector and ensure that quarry activities comply with legal requirements. The use of drone technology has significantly improved monitoring capabilities, aiding in the detection of irregularities in mining practices. The government has pledged to take additional measures based on the detailed drone survey reports and subsequent investigations, with a focus on enforcing legal and administrative actions where violations are confirmed.
