The Tamil Nadu Geology and Mining Department will employ drones with advanced surveillance technology to oversee quarry operations statewide. This decision follows the discovery of numerous violations during recent inspections. The move aims to enhance enforcement, deter illegal mining, and ensure adherence to quarrying regulations.
Natural Resources Minister T.K. Prabhu personally led surprise inspections at quarry sites in various districts like Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Virudhunagar, and Madurai. These inspections are part of the state’s intensified efforts to crack down on mining violations. Officials scrutinized quarry activities, lease terms, and regulatory compliance at numerous locations.
During the inspections, authorities assessed 431 quarries, with 155 found to be breaching rules and operational guidelines. Consequently, the minister ordered the immediate suspension of quarrying at these sites. Violations included lease breaches, exceeding mining limits, and regulatory non-compliance. The department is taking follow-up actions against the suspended operators to prevent further illegal activities and unauthorized mineral transportation.
To bolster monitoring efforts, the department will conduct routine drone inspections at all leased quarries. These drones, equipped with advanced surveillance systems, will enhance oversight by monitoring excavation activities, ensuring compliance with mining limits, and identifying unauthorized operations more efficiently than traditional ground inspections. The use of drones will provide accurate aerial imagery and real-time data, enhancing transparency and enabling swift violation detection.
The government views the adoption of drone-based surveillance as a means to tighten regulatory control over the mining sector, combat illegal quarrying, and safeguard natural resources. This technological upgrade signifies a more stringent enforcement stance by the state government against quarry violations. Authorities plan to sustain inspections and enforcement actions in the upcoming months to promote lawful, transparent, and environmentally conscious mining practices across Tamil Nadu.
