The World Para Athletics (WPA) has chosen Tashkent as the host city for the 2027 World Para Athletics Championships. This will be the first time the event is held in Uzbekistan and Central Asia. The championships are scheduled to take place at the Olympic City Main Stadium in June 2027.
Tashkent 2027 will mark the 13th edition of the World Para Athletics Championships. It will be the fifth time the event is hosted in Asia, following previous editions in Doha 2015, Dubai 2019, Kobe 2024, and New Delhi 2025. The International Paralympic Committee has confirmed these details in a recent release.
The upcoming championships are expected to see around 1,300 athletes from over 100 nations participating. This event is set to become the largest international Para sport event ever hosted in Uzbekistan. The final number of events is yet to be finalized, but the program is likely to include at least 164 events, in alignment with the Paralympic Games program.
Paul Fitzgerald, Head of World Para Athletics, expressed his excitement about Tashkent hosting the 2027 World Para Athletics Championships. He emphasized the significance of this event for both Uzbekistan and the Central Asian region. Fitzgerald mentioned that this event will provide significant opportunities to promote Para sports, expand the fan base, and influence societal perceptions of persons with disabilities in the region.
