The Tata Sons board meeting wrapped up on Tuesday at Bombay House, with attention focused on the conglomerate’s leadership and financial performance concerns. Noel Tata and other directors arrived in the morning and departed in the late afternoon after the meeting. N Chandrasekaran, upon leaving the South Mumbai headquarters, did not disclose details about the discussions or decisions made during the meeting.
The meeting took place amidst internal tensions within the Tata Group regarding losses in newer ventures and ongoing talks about leadership continuity. Reports indicate that discussions on Chandrasekaran’s reappointment as chairman were not on the agenda for this meeting. Chandrasekaran and Noel Tata reportedly discussed the financial performance of group companies, particularly the challenges faced by various unlisted businesses.
It has been reported that Tata Group’s unlisted ventures collectively suffered losses of nearly Rs 10,905 crore in FY25, with projections indicating a potential increase to about Rs 29,000 crore. These losses have raised concerns within Tata Trusts, which holds a significant stake in Tata Sons. Noel Tata has reportedly expressed worries about the financial performance of certain newer businesses introduced or expanded during Chandrasekaran’s leadership, such as Tata Digital, electronics ventures, and the acquired Air India.
The board meeting occurred following a series of governance-related events within the Tata Group and Tata Trusts in recent times. Earlier, the Maharashtra State Charity Commissioner instructed Tata Trusts to postpone a crucial board meeting due to complaints regarding board of trustees composition issues at Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT). Tata Trusts clarified that the directive was specific to SRTT and was being reviewed. Meetings of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) and SRTT, initially set for May 8, were rescheduled to May 16 for legal and governance deliberations, focusing on matters like Tata Sons’ potential listing, Chandrasekaran’s chairmanship continuation, and the roles of certain nominee directors.
