The Telangana Advocates Protection Act, 2026, has been put into effect by the Telangana government led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. This Act aims to safeguard advocates in the execution of their professional duties. The Law Department issued Government Order (G.O) No. 41 to enforce the Act statewide.
The legislation was passed by the Assembly in March this year to shield advocates from escalating attacks. The Governor granted approval for the Bill, emphasizing the need for advocate protection. The Act includes provisions for police security, defense against false cases, a grievance redressal system, and protection from threats during professional duties.
The state government highlighted the significance of this law in ensuring the safety and security of advocates. It was developed in consultation with various legal bodies and the Bar Council of Telangana. Minister for Legislative Affairs D. Sridhar Babu emphasized that this Act strengthens the legal profession and empowers advocates to dispense justice fearlessly.
Telangana joins Karnataka and Rajasthan in enacting such legislation, following a draft by the Bar Council of India in 2021. The Act’s enforcement follows the tragic killing of advocate Khaja Moizuddin in Hyderabad. The police arrested Congress leader Mujahid Alam Khan and his associates for their alleged involvement in the advocate’s murder over property disputes.
