Telangana BJP has strongly criticized the state government for its alleged failure in the education sector. The State Chief Spokesperson, N.V. Subhash, emphasized the importance of education, stating that every child should have the opportunity to learn. He expressed concern over the reported closure and consolidation of government schools by the Telangana Chief Minister.
The controversy revolves around CM Revanth Reddy’s plan to restructure government schools, potentially consolidating thousands of institutions in Telangana. Reports suggest that around 27,000 schools may be merged into approximately 4,000 larger establishments. This move has sparked criticism from various political figures and civil society organizations, who fear it could limit access to education in rural areas.
G. Haragopal, a leader of the Telangana Save Education Committee (TSEC), described the proposal as “deeply unfortunate” and cautioned that it might diminish the presence of schools in rural communities. He stressed the importance of having a government school in every village to foster an inclusive society and called for the immediate retraction of the Chief Minister’s statements regarding school closures.
The TSEC has urged the government to increase investment in education, proposing that 20% of the budget be allocated to the sector. They advocate for the enhancement of all government schools in the state to provide quality, equitable, and free education for all. The controversy has sparked a heated political debate in Telangana, with opposition leaders accusing the government of undermining access to basic education and civil society groups advocating for the protection and expansion of government school infrastructure.
