Telangana’s irrigation minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy affirmed the state government’s dedication to the Pranahita–Chevella Project. Plans aligned with the manifesto’s promises are in place, focusing on diverting water from Tummidihatti to Yellampalli for extensive irrigation purposes. Various proposals, including those by RV Associates and IIT Hyderabad, are under thorough evaluation for cost, feasibility, and benefits, with a final decision pending a meeting with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.
A recent review meeting at the minister’s office discussed alternative alignments for water diversion and the restoration of key barrages like Medigadda, Sundilla, and Annaram as part of the Kaleshwaram project. The Congress government’s initiative to revive the Pranahita–Chevella Project, previously integrated into the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, aims to rectify past errors. Minister Reddy urged officials to expedite necessary tests for the barrages’ restoration before the monsoon season, emphasizing the importance of thorough testing protocols and timely completion.
To ensure the restoration progresses swiftly, a coordination committee has been tasked with site visits and timeline establishment. The minister emphasized the need for regular updates on the testing and restoration progress to be shared with the National Dam Safety Authority. Notable attendees at the meeting included key officials like Irrigation Principal Secretary E. Sreedhar, ENC Ramesh Babu, and representatives from RV Associates and IIT Hyderabad, among others.
