The Telangana government is engaging in discussions with Maharashtra to finalize plans for the Tummidihatti Barrage on the Godavari River. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has reached out to Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, to schedule talks regarding the project. The proposed barrage is part of the B.R. Ambedkar Pranahita–Chevella Sujala Sravanthi Project, initially planned at a height of 152 meters.
The Maharashtra government had previously agreed during an Inter-State Board meeting to construct the barrage at a height of 148 meters. However, after reviewing the project’s requirements, the Telangana government believes that a Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 148 meters may not suffice for North Telangana’s water needs. Therefore, discussions on potentially increasing the height of the barrage are crucial to address irrigation and drinking water requirements in several districts.
CM Revanth Reddy emphasized the importance of reevaluating the Tummidihatti barrage’s height to meet the water needs of Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, and Medak districts. The government aims to rectify past decisions and ensure sufficient water supply through the Pranahita–Chevella Project. Efforts are underway to divert water from Tummidihatti to Yellampalli for irrigation purposes, with a focus on enhancing water availability for agricultural lands.
