The newly-appointed Commissioner of Police of Telangana’s Malkajgiri, B. Sumathi, conducted an undercover operation to assess women’s safety at night. Posing as an ordinary woman at a bus stand in Dilsukhnagar, she was surrounded and harassed by around 40 men, some of whom were drunk and made inappropriate advances. Police teams nearby intervened, detained the men, counselled them, and issued warnings.
This operation aimed to address concerns about women’s safety in public places, particularly during nighttime. Sumathi, who recently took charge as the first woman Police Commissioner, has a history of conducting such field exercises. She began her career as a Group-1 DSP in 2001 and has since held various critical roles in intelligence and law enforcement.
Before becoming Commissioner, Sumathi served as the Inspector General of Police, Special Intelligence Bureau, where she played a significant role in the surrender of multiple Maoists. Her dialogue-based approach reportedly led to the surrender of 591 Maoists over two years, including senior leader Tippiri Tirupati alias Devuji.
