Caste census and efforts to increase reservations for Backward Classes were the key highlights of Telangana politics in 2025. The state’s Socio-Economic, Education, Employment, Political and Caste Survey found that Backward Classes make up 56.33% of the population.
The survey also revealed that Scheduled Castes account for 17.43%, Scheduled Tribes 10.45%, and Other Castes 13.31% of the population. Muslims constitute 12.56%, with 10.08% falling under the Backward Classes category.
The Congress government conducted the caste census to fulfill its promise of social justice, aligning with Rahul Gandhi’s principle of rights proportional to population. Telangana was hailed as the first state to conduct such a census, receiving praise from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Rahul Gandhi.
