The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) plans to expand its fleet with 2,200 electric buses, announced State Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar Goud. Currently, 960 electric buses are in operation in Telangana, with the additional buses set to be introduced soon. The move is part of the state’s efforts to reduce pollution and enhance public transportation through eco-friendly initiatives.
Minister Goud highlighted the government’s commitment to promoting green practices, including the introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) to combat pollution. He emphasized ongoing initiatives such as free travel for women, welfare programs for RTC employees, and the establishment of new depots to support sustainable transport solutions.
The deployment of 3,000 electric buses is expected to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 600 tonnes, contributing to environmental conservation. Minister Goud underscored the importance of transitioning to EVs to prevent Hyderabad from facing pollution challenges similar to those in Delhi. The minister also acknowledged the impact of fluctuating petrol and diesel prices on public transportation services.
With a current fleet of 10,000 buses, including nearly 1,000 electric buses, the Telangana RTC serves around 35 lakh passengers daily in Hyderabad. The introduction of electric buses not only enhances the efficiency of public transport but also aids in alleviating traffic congestion and pollution in the city. Minister Goud praised the reforms implemented by the government within the RTC, positioning it as a leading organization in the country.
In a bid to address employee concerns, the government announced regular discussions with District Managers, Regional Managers, and senior officials to resolve grievances. Additionally, plans are underway to conduct elections for RTC trade unions and engage with union representatives to address pending issues. Under the ‘Mahalakshmi Scheme,’ women have availed 310 crore tickets to date, showcasing the government’s commitment to empowering women through free travel facilities and opportunities to become bus owners.
