A mild tension arose at the Calcutta High Court when Mamata Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress chief and former Chief Minister, was leaving after representing a PIL on alleged post-poll violence. Some lawyers and onlookers shouted derogatory remarks at her, with Banerjee alleging assault by a group of lawyers. The former Chief Minister, addressing the media, expressed being attacked and subsequently left the court premises.
Trinamool Congress condemned the incident, with party spokesperson Arup Chakraborty criticizing the undemocratic behavior displayed towards Banerjee within the court premises. Chakraborty highlighted the irony of such actions within a place meant for justice, questioning the state’s democratic environment under the new BJP administration. Banerjee had earlier sought court intervention to curb post-poll violence, especially targeting women and minority groups.
During the court proceedings, Banerjee urged Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen to address post-poll violence concerns, particularly against vulnerable sections of society. However, the state government’s counsel, Dhiraj Trivedi, dismissed Banerjee’s claims, arguing that without specific instances, the allegations lacked substance.
