Tension flared up in Sundargarh district, Odisha, following rumors of beef being sold at a meat shop in Regent Market. Local youths objected to the alleged sale, leading to a tense situation. The police intervened to calm both groups, but the situation escalated in the afternoon.
A large crowd gathered at the market, resulting in heated arguments and violence. Both sides engaged in stone-pelting, damaging vehicles and vandalizing shops. Several people, including a police officer and community members, sustained injuries during the clash.
To control the situation, the Sundargarh police deployed 10 platoons of police force. Heavy police presence was observed at Regent Market and other sensitive areas in the town. The authorities imposed Section 144 of the BNSS Act to prevent gatherings at the spot.
The Odisha Home Department temporarily suspended internet services in Sundargarh district to curb the spread of provocative messages. Schools and colleges in the district were closed due to the prevailing tension. The district collector issued an order for the closure in light of the law and order situation.
