Tension lingers in various parts of Manipur’s Ukhrul district due to clashes and the burning of about 20 houses owned by Naga and Kuki tribal community members. The violence erupted after a Tangkhul Naga community member was severely attacked, leading to clashes between Naga and Kuki groups in Litan village. The district administration imposed prohibitory orders to control the situation.
The Tangkhul tribe is the largest Naga tribe in Manipur, while Litan Sareikhong is mainly inhabited by the Kuki community. Ukhrul District Magistrate Asish Das imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, to prevent further unrest between the two communities. The orders restrict movement and activities that could disrupt law and order in the affected areas.
Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, a Naga leader, has been present in the troubled area to ease tensions. Meetings have been held with local residents and tribal leaders to address the situation. Additional central forces have been deployed in vulnerable areas to prevent escalation and maintain peace.
Security forces used tear gas shells to disperse the clashing groups at Litan Sareikhong village. The Manipur government has arranged special helicopter services to facilitate transportation between Ukhrul and Imphal, aiming to provide seamless services to the people of Manipur.
