Tensions are high in Manipur’s Ukhrul and Kamjong districts following the killing of four NSCN-IM cadres. The incident, suspected to be a fratricidal clash, occurred in Kamjong district, leading to unrest in the region. Six cadres were ambushed, resulting in four deaths and two escaping, escalating tensions further.

In response to the killings, an angry mob set fire to NSCN-IM’s Wung regional office in Ukhrul district, though no casualties were reported. Various Naga organizations, including student groups and civil society, have condemned the incident, calling for a transparent investigation to ensure justice for the victims. The families of the deceased have refused to perform last rites until a credible explanation is provided.

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has urged for calm and restoration of peace in Ukhrul, emphasizing that violence is not a solution. He assured that the government is taking the matter seriously and that the law will be upheld. A delegation from Ukhrul district, accompanied by the state Home Minister, met with the Chief Minister to discuss the situation and developmental concerns in the region.

The incident is part of a series of events that have heightened tensions in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts since February. The NSCN-IM has denied issuing any directive for attacks, stating that an investigation is ongoing to determine the facts and hold those responsible accountable.
