US-based Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer, sold 225 units of its Model Y SUV in India in 2025, as per industry data. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) reported that Tesla retailed 64 units in September, 40 in October, 48 in November, and 73 in December. Tesla, which opened its first showroom in India in July, offers the Model Y as a fully built unit with a rear-wheel-drive powertrain.
The standard rear-wheel-drive variant of the Model Y is priced at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Long Range RWD variant costs Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom). These prices are higher in India due to the country’s high import duties on fully built vehicles. Tesla currently operates experience centers in Gurugram, Mumbai, and Delhi, along with 12 superchargers and 10 destination chargers in these cities.
Tesla claims that the Model Y offers a range of up to 500 km, with the Long Range version reaching up to 622 km. The standard variant accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 5.9 seconds, while the Long Range variant does it in 5.6 seconds, both having a top speed of 201 kph. According to the company, fast charging can add approximately 238 km of range for the standard model and about 267 km for the Long Range in just 15 minutes.
In 2025, India’s electric vehicle market represented 8% of all new vehicle registrations, with total EV sales hitting 2.3 million units, according to Vahan Portal data. The India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) reported that electric two-wheelers dominated EV sales with 1.28 million units, accounting for 57% of total EV sales. Electric three-wheelers (L3 and L5) made up 0.8 million units, or 35% of EV sales, while electric four-wheelers saw sales of 175,000 units, especially in small and light commercial electric goods carriers.
