In a setback for CPI-M leader E.P. Jayarajan, a Thiruvananthapuram court rejected the police report clearing him in the IndiGo flight assault case. The court ordered a fresh probe into allegations that Jayarajan assaulted Youth Congress activists protesting against then Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inside an aircraft.
The Judicial First Class Magistrate court instructed the police to conduct a new investigation into the complaint. The case stems from an incident on a flight from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram where Youth Congress activists allegedly protested against Vijayan.
The court also mandated a new report after examining the accusations against Jayarajan and Anilkumar, the former Chief Minister’s gunman. The Valiyathura police’s earlier report found no sufficient grounds to file a case against Jayarajan. However, the court deemed further examination necessary and refused to close the matter at this stage.
The fresh order requires the police to revisit the incident’s circumstances, re-record statements, and assess the roles of those accused. The investigation will run parallel to the existing case against Youth Congress activists involved in the protest. The court’s decision has reignited the politically sensitive case, potentially impacting one of CPI-M’s senior leaders.
