Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Mayor V.V. Rajesh criticized the police for creating unnecessary tension during the arrest of BJP councilor R. Sugathan. Rajesh alleged that the police firing was merely to create a scene and that there was no briefing on the case. Sugathan, representing the Vazhoottukonam ward, was arrested by the Vattiyoorkavu Police and taken to Central Jail amidst dramatic scenes at his residence.
Sugathan, the first sitting councilor to be jailed under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities Prevention Act (KAAPA), faced a new case for allegedly assaulting police officers during the arrest. This arrest was related to a case of attempted murder following a dispute at a temple festival two months ago. Despite seeking anticipatory bail, Sugathan failed to appear before the investigating officer as directed by the High Court.
The police, acting on secret information, attempted to arrest Sugathan at his residence, leading to a confrontation with his supporters. The situation escalated, resulting in the police firing into the air to disperse the crowd and taking Sugathan into custody. Allegations of assault on police officers were made against Sugathan and his brother, which they denied. The police, however, maintained that force was used in self-defence during the arrest.
