At least 4,791 individuals lost their lives in road traffic accidents in Pakistan’s Punjab province in 2025, a 19% increase from the previous year. The province witnessed 482,870 road traffic accidents in 2025, resulting in nearly 570,000 injuries. Comparatively, there were 467,561 accidents in 2024 with 4,139 deaths and 420,387 crashes in 2023 with 3,967 fatalities.

The rise in road traffic accidents by 5.8% in 2025, along with a disproportionate increase in fatalities, highlights the escalating severity of crashes. Emergency Services Secretary Rizwan Naseer expressed concern over these findings during an annual operational review meeting. He emphasized the alarming situation in Punjab, where road traffic accidents are a frequent occurrence, affecting many families’ primary breadwinners.

Reports indicate an increase in road traffic crashes in 34 other districts across Punjab. Lahore topped the list in 2025 with 88,743 accidents, followed by Faisalabad with 32,309 and Multan with 29,804. Murree recorded 1,889 accidents, while Attock and Jhelum reported 3,748 and 4,301 crashes, respectively.

An analysis revealed that motorcycles were responsible for 75% of accidents, followed by cars at 8.6% and rickshaws at 4.7%. Buses, trucks, and vans accounted for 4.3% of accidents, with 7.4% involving other vehicle types. Pedestrians constituted 10.34% of road accident victims, emphasizing the risks faced by those walking near busy roads.

Data from Rescue 1122 indicated that the majority of injuries included fractures and head injuries, with 80.6% of the 569,901 injured individuals being men and 19.4% women.
