A Fast Track Special Court in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district has sentenced three individuals to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in a gangrape case reported in the Tirtol area in 2024. The convicts were found guilty under Sections 376D and 506 of the Indian Penal Code and were each fined Rs 10,000.
The incident took place on February 3, 2024, when a 29-year-old woman was gang-raped near the Nimakana Railway Station in Jagatsinghpur district. Following the victim’s complaint, the Odisha Police initiated a thorough investigation and arrested the accused trio, identified as Ranjan Kumar Sila, Biswaranjan Naik, and Suresh Kumar Behera.
The Crime Against Women and Children Wing (CAW&CW) of Odisha Police took over the investigation due to the case’s sensitivity. Deputy Superintendent of Police Iman Kalyan Nayak led the investigation, resulting in the filing of a charge sheet and subsequent conviction of the accused.
The court’s decision was based on the charge sheet and compelling evidence presented during the trial. Additionally, the court directed financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to be provided to the victim under the Odisha Victim Compensation Scheme. The Odisha Police highlighted the importance of conducting thorough investigations into crimes against women and children to ensure justice for victims.
