Days after the discovery of a mutilated tiger carcass in Umaria district’s forest area, the Forest Department has apprehended five suspects in connection with the poaching incident. The breakthrough occurred following a rigorous operation conducted by the Madhya Pradesh State Forest Development Corporation in the Chandia range.
All five accused individuals, residents of Majhgawa village, were apprehended with the help of technical surveillance and information from local informants, as confirmed by Umaria Divisional Forest Officer Amit Pataudi. During the operation, officials also found wooden pegs and galvanized iron wires believed to have been used in setting up an illegal electrical trap in the forest.
Investigations unveiled that the tiger met its demise through electrocution in Compartment P-111, where the perpetrators had installed a lethal trap using live electric wires. Preliminary findings suggest that the accused have been engaging in poaching activities for a significant period, targeting wildlife by strategically placing electrified wires deep within forested areas.
Authorities suspect that one of the accused individuals removed the tiger’s teeth, sparking concerns about potential involvement in wildlife trafficking. The suspects are scheduled to appear before the Umaria district court, as confirmed by Pataudi. Enhanced patrolling and surveillance measures have been implemented in the region to avert similar incidents and safeguard wildlife.
The recent incident brings the tally of tiger fatalities reported in Madhya Pradesh this year to 18, underscoring fresh worries about wildlife conservation in the state. The decomposed tiger carcass was discovered earlier this week in shrubbery within the Forest Development Corporation’s jurisdiction.
