Srinagar, Aug 11 (IANS) Police said on Tuesday that foolproof security arrangements have been made for the Independence Day celebrations in Kashmir and people should participate in these functions in large numbers.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone, V.K. Birdi said that tight security arrangements have been put in place and people should wholeheartedly participate in the events.

Speaking to reporters, Birdi said the Independence Day programme is essentially a people’s celebration, and the police and other security agencies are only responsible for organising and securing the events.

Asked about the two recent terror attacks in South Kashmir districts, the officer said police would share details regarding the attacks at an appropriate time.

Ahead of Independence Day on August 15, authorities have enforced a multi-layered security blanket across Srinagar and the whole Kashmir Valley.

Measures include strict vehicle checks, random frisking at vital intersections like Lal Chowk and TRC crossing, deployment of police in civilian clothes and intense area domination.

The IGP said that multi-layer security surrounds the main venues and extends throughout the city and all districts of the Valley. Main function venues are subject to heightened security protocols, including controlled access and perimeter monitoring to ensure the safety of participants.

Security personnel have increased their presence in public areas and commercial hubs. Upgraded CCTV systems are also being used to monitor public pathways and gather intelligence to deter untoward incidents.

Security forces have established checkpoints at various entry and exit points in Srinagar to monitor traffic and conduct routine preventive checks.

Vigil has been increased along major thoroughfares, including the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and the Srinagar-Baramulla highway. These measures are part of a broader effort to ensure a peaceful and smooth celebration.

The main parade and flag-hoisting function in Jammu and Kashmir is being held at the Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar city. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is scheduled to hoist the national flag and inspect the parade in the stadium on August 15.
