Left-handed batsman Tilak Varma has been appointed as the captain of the India ‘A’ team for the upcoming 50-over tri-series in Sri Lanka. The squad, announced by the senior men’s selection committee, also includes promising young batters Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Priyansh Arya. The tri-series, to be held in Dambulla from June 9-21, will see India ‘A’ competing against Sri Lanka ‘A’ and Afghanistan ‘A’.
This will mark Sooryavanshi’s debut in the India ‘A’ setup, following his outstanding performances across different formats. Sooryavanshi, who was named Player of the Final and Player of the Tournament in India’s Under-19 World Cup victory earlier this year, has been in impressive form. In the ongoing IPL 2026 season, he has amassed 440 runs in 11 matches for the Rajasthan Royals at a remarkable strike-rate of 236.56. Arya, another explosive talent, has showcased his prowess by scoring 342 runs in ten games for Punjab Kings at a strike-rate of 226.49.
Varma, on the other hand, has been a consistent leader for India ‘A’. He previously captained the team in various tournaments, including the ACC Men’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup and the one-day series against South Africa ‘A’. Riyan Parag will serve as the vice-captain for the squad, which also features players like Ayush Badoni, Nishant Sindhu, and Harsh Dubey. The team’s bowling department will be spearheaded by Yash Thakur, Yudhvir Singh, and Arshad Khan, among others.
India ‘A’ is set to kick off their campaign against Sri Lanka ‘A’ on June 9, followed by a match against Afghanistan ‘A’ on June 11. The tournament will conclude with the final scheduled for June 21 after a round-robin stage that runs until June 19.
