Tottenham Hotspur has finalized the acquisition of Portugal’s midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United. Fernandes, aged 21, views this move as a significant progression in his career after a successful stint in the Premier League with West Ham. The young talent, who has already represented Portugal at the senior level, is set to bolster Tottenham’s midfield for the upcoming season.
Sporting Director Johan Lange expressed confidence in Fernandes, believing he possesses the necessary technical skills and maturity to become a pivotal player for Tottenham. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi, instrumental in persuading Fernandes to join, lauded the player’s technical prowess and tactical acumen. De Zerbi highlighted Fernandes’ ability to combine ball quality with intensity and intelligence, essential for their style of play.
Mateus Fernandes, a product of Sporting CP’s academy, made his senior debut in 2022 and later excelled during a loan spell at Estoril. His impressive performances at Southampton earned him the Player of the Season award before his move to West Ham in 2025. At West Ham, Fernandes showcased consistency, contributing three goals and four assists while being among the top tacklers in the league. His standout displays earned him a call-up to the Portugal national team, where he made his debut in a victory against the United States.
