Undeterred by a recent terror attack, tourists are continuing to visit the picturesque town of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir as they prepare to ring in the New Year. Following the tragic incident on April 22 that claimed the lives of 26 tourists, the region witnessed a significant drop in tourism. However, visitors are now returning to enjoy the serene hill destination.
Many tourists have expressed their satisfaction with the improved security measures in place. A visitor from Haryana mentioned that it was her first time in Kashmir and praised the beauty of the region, emphasizing the sense of safety provided by the security arrangements. Another tourist echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the overall excellent experience in Pahalgam.
Despite the challenges faced earlier, a group of college students also chose Pahalgam as their New Year celebration spot. Optimistic about the possibility of snowfall in the coming days, the students appreciated the cooperation of the locals and the peaceful atmosphere in the area. The aftermath of the April attack had led to the closure of various tourist spots due to security reasons, causing a ripple effect on the local economy.
The tourism sector, a vital component of the region’s economy, suffered significant setbacks post the attack. With the shutdown of businesses and loss of jobs, the community faced financial hardships. To revive tourism, efforts were made by both the local and central governments, including phased reopening of tourist destinations, bolstering security measures, and instilling confidence among tourists. The current surge in visitors ahead of New Year celebrations signals a positive trend towards the recovery of tourism in Pahalgam and the broader Kashmir Valley.
