At least eight individuals, including women and children, lost their lives, and 11 others sustained severe injuries in a tragic head-on collision between an overcrowded pick-up and a heavy-duty truck in Punjab’s Ferozepur district. The incident occurred on the Ferozepur-Fazilka road early in the morning as a close-knit family from Jalabad village was en route to Beas in Amritsar district for a religious ceremony.
The collision, which occurred around 5:40 A.M., resulted in significant damage to the pick-up vehicle, with four occupants dying instantly and four more succumbing to injuries on the way to the hospital. The victims, primarily from the same family, were heading to Beas to perform the final rites of a deceased relative by immersing ashes in the Beas River, as confirmed by Ferozepur Senior Superintendent of Police Rajinder Singh.
Authorities had to extricate trapped passengers from the mangled vehicles, with several critically injured individuals being transferred to medical facilities for urgent treatment. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck driver lost control, leading to the collision and subsequent tragic outcome. Postmortem examinations are currently underway, and the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
