A tragic road accident near Vellakovil in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including a police constable, during the early hours of Wednesday. The incident occurred when a speeding car collided with a lorry near a police checkpoint on the Karur National Highway. The accident took place as officials were clearing a lorry that had hit the median barrier on the road.
Police constable Ravichandran, who was assisting in the operation, was among the victims of the mishap. A car traveling at high speed lost control and crashed into the stationary lorry with significant force, causing a fatal collision. The impact of the crash was so severe that all six individuals, including Constable Ravichandran, the lorry driver, and four car occupants, lost their lives instantly.
Efforts were made by senior police officials and rescue personnel to recover the bodies of the victims from the mangled vehicles. The deceased were then transported to a nearby government hospital for post-mortem examinations. Authorities are currently verifying the identities of the deceased and working to inform their families.
Preliminary investigations suggest that overspeeding may have been a major factor in the accident, although officials are exploring all possible angles. The Vellakovil police have initiated a detailed investigation into the incident and have registered a case. Traffic flow along the highway was disrupted temporarily following the accident but was later restored after the damaged vehicles were cleared.
The tragic incident has deeply affected the local community, especially with the loss of the police constable who was on duty at the time of the accident.
