Train services on key railway routes in Upper Assam have been halted as floodwaters from the overflowing Dikhow River submerged tracks and station areas at Simaluguri in Sivasagar district. The Northeast Frontier Railway officials stated that heavy rainfall in the upstream regions caused a rapid increase in the Dikhow River, resulting in extensive flooding in Simaluguri town.
The floodwaters have affected the railway station yard, railway colony, and nearby tracks, posing risks to train operations. To ensure passenger safety and mitigate operational hazards due to the flooded tracks, rail traffic has been suspended in the Simaluguri–Namtiali and Simaluguri–Selenghat sections until conditions improve.
In response to the situation, emergency teams have been mobilized by the railway authorities, deploying personnel and necessary equipment to the affected sites. However, repair work can only begin once the water levels subside adequately for a thorough damage assessment.
Railway services originating from Dibrugarh and Tinsukia have been impacted by the disruptions, leading to diversions through the Rangiya–Rangapara route to maintain connectivity, albeit causing delays. The ongoing flood crisis in Assam has worsened, affecting transport infrastructure and displacing thousands of individuals amid continuous rainfall.
