Players from both the Indian and English teams, along with match officials, paid tribute to the legendary Sir Garfield Sobers at Lord’s. They wore black armbands and observed a minute’s silence before the series-deciding match. Sobers, known as the sport’s greatest all-rounder, passed away at the age of 89.

The minute’s silence, perfectly observed by all, resonated deeply with the crowd at Lord’s, evoking nostalgia and respect for Sobers. Hailing from Barbados, Sobers had a remarkable international cricket career spanning from 1954 to 1974. He left a lasting legacy, having scored 8,032 runs in 93 Tests at an impressive average of 57.78, in addition to taking 235 wickets and holding 109 catches.

Sir Garfield Sobers, who was the first batter in first-class cricket history to hit six sixes in an over in 1968, was revered by the West Indies cricket community. England pacer Jofra Archer expressed sadness at Sobers’ passing, highlighting his legendary status. Sobers, who captained West Indies in 39 Tests, remains one of the two players, alongside Jacques Kallis, to achieve the milestone of 8,000 runs and 200 wickets in Tests.

Young batting all-rounder Jacob Bethell fondly remembered Sobers as a ‘larger than life’ figure. Bethell shared how Sobers, a humble and charismatic personality, had a significant impact on his cricketing journey. Sobers’ support and guidance played a crucial role in Bethell’s career, helping him secure opportunities in England and excel in his current endeavors.
