Jahangir Khan, the Trinamool Congress candidate for Falta Assembly constituency in West Bengal, has filed for anticipatory bail ahead of the upcoming repolling on May 21. Khan’s plea, admitted by Justice Saugata Bhattacharya of the Calcutta High Court, is scheduled for a hearing on Monday afternoon. He alleges that the police have falsely charged him and requests the court to disclose the number and details of FIRs against him.
Khan fears arrest before the polling day and has raised concerns in his anticipatory bail petition. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shuvendu Adhikari, during a meeting in Falta, hinted at addressing Khan’s situation post the repolling process. The repolling decision follows complaints of electoral malpractices during the initial voting on April 29 in Falta, where EVM tampering allegations were reported.
The Election Commission of India ordered a repoll in the entire Falta constituency based on the findings of the special poll observer, Subrata Gupta. The re-election is set for May 21, with result declaration scheduled for May 24.
