Trinamool Chhatra Parishad’s (TMCP) Purulia district president, Kiriti Acharya, was arrested in Purulia on charges of financial fraud. He is set to appear before a local court after being taken into custody on Saturday night. Police are planning to request his custody for further investigation.
Acharya faced multiple complaints, including accusations of financial irregularities, leading to his arrest. Following the Trinamool Congress’s loss in the Assembly elections, he had been missing from public view. Despite his previous active presence on social media, he had maintained silence and refrained from political engagements.
Having aligned with the ‘original but minority’ faction of the Trinamool Congress post the party split, Acharya had distanced himself from public activities after the election defeat. Known for his social media criticism of the BJP and the central government during the Trinamool era, he had notably withdrawn from online platforms after the change in state governance.
A complaint from locals in Purulia town resulted in Acharya’s arrest on Saturday, marking the culmination of allegations of financial fraud against him. This incident follows the recent arrests of other officials, including Sujoy Banerjee and Kripasindhu Banerjee, in connection with fraudulent activities linked to government schemes.
Acharya’s arrest adds to the ongoing scrutiny faced by Trinamool leaders in Purulia over financial improprieties, highlighting a broader investigation into alleged irregularities within the party.
